My Mother and I: Afghan Women’s Voices Amplified in Groundbreaking Cultural Project
Media Release
Afghan Women on the Move partners with Mercy Works to amplify Afghan women’s voices, strengthening cultural understanding, and ensuring Afghan women’s contributions are recognised and celebrated.
Groundbreaking storytelling project to celebrate resilience, preserve culture, and inspire inclusion.
Afghan Women on the Move (AWOTM) has joined forces with Mercy Works to launch My Mother and I: The Untold Stories of Afghan Women — a landmark initiative giving Afghan women in Australia a powerful platform to share their lived experiences and cultural heritage.
Through writing and leadership workshops, thematic analysis, and a community-led publication, the project will honour mothers and daughters, celebrate their resilience, and preserve untold stories for future generations. It will also culminate in a short documentary film and a series of storytelling events in 2026, including a special launch in March to mark International Women’s Day.
“With this project, we are not only documenting stories — we are building bridges of empathy, inclusion, and hope,” said Maryam Zahid, CEO of Afghan Women on the Move. “These stories are a legacy. They honour our mothers, our culture, and our shared humanity. Together with Mercy Works, we can ensure these voices are heard loud and clear.”
Mercy Works’s partnership will enable AWOTM to employ skilled facilitators, deliver high-quality workshops, and create culturally safe spaces where women can share, heal, and connect.
